Lake Natron weather in short

Lake Natron sits in a dry rift valley, and the weather is dominated by heat. The area is arid, with less than 500 mm of rain a year outside El Niño years. That is a general guide to the climate, not a forecast for the year you travel.

Rain still matters, because it arrives in two seasons and when it does come, it can turn the road and the stream beds into obstacles. In the north of Tanzania the rains fall mainly from March to May and from October to December. Plan your stay around what you want to do, then check the road with your camp. If you are choosing activities first, see Lake Natron tours and safaris.

Lake Natron temperature and heat

The open soda flats give little relief from the sun, and the hours around midday are hot. That is why the lake walk, which runs 1–4 hours, is best at sunrise or sunset. Start early, wear sun protection and carry more drinking water than you think you need.

Heat shows up in the water too. Hot springs feed the lake, and the water where they enter can reach up to 60 °C. That figure describes the springs, not the air. It is one more reason to stay on the paths your guide uses and not to wade into the lake.

Whichever month you choose, plan for heat first and for rain second.

Our pick: a night at the lake

The rainy seasons and what they change

Rain matters more for travel than for temperature.

Roads

The road from Arusha takes 5–6 hours via Mto wa Mbu or about 5 hours via Longido, and it is rough. Heavy rain can cause flooding and make roads impassable, so add time in the rainy months. Travel advice for 2026 warns of an above-average risk of rain in parts of Tanzania from October to December.

River crossings

The walk to the Engare Sero waterfall has several river crossings. Water levels rise after heavy rain, so ask your guide about the water before you start, and do not enter the gorge if it looks wrong.

Camps sit on open ground. Ask about shelter and about how the road to your camp behaves in rain.

For most visitors, the months outside March to May and October to December are the easiest, because roads and stream crossings behave best. The flamingos set their own calendar, so do not plan the whole trip around a month. Even in the dry months the climb is never guaranteed.

Flamingos and weather

Lesser flamingos use Lake Natron as their regular breeding area in East Africa, but breeding can fail entirely when conditions are poor. That is why there is no promise of a certain month, and no promise of chicks. The adults feed on the lake and can be seen from the shore with a guide on a walk.

How hot is Lake Natron?

Hot, especially around midday on the open flats. Plan walks for sunrise or sunset and carry plenty of water.

Not much overall, with less than 500 mm a year outside El Niño years, but it falls in two seasons and heavy rain can flood roads and stream beds.

Is the lake water really that hot?

At the hot springs that feed the lake, yes. The water there can reach up to 60 °C. The lake as a whole is not a place to wade into.

Should I avoid the rainy months?

Not necessarily, but plan more time on the road and ask about the waterfall crossings and the climb on the day.
