Lake Natron Camping and Lodges

Where you sleep at Lake Natron

There is no town at the lake. Overnight stays are in camps and fixed tented accommodation, and camps are found near Ngare Sero on the soda flats south of the lake. From there the waterfall, the footprints and the lake walk are close, and the volcano rises on the skyline.

Lake Natron camping comes in two basic forms: pitching or using a camp tent at an established site, or booking a fixed tent with a bed. Most camps also arrange the guided activities, so the choice of camp often decides which Lake Natron tours you take.

Lake Natron lodge and fixed tents

A fixed tent is a tent that stays in place, so you arrive and do not carry gear. It is the closest thing to a Lake Natron lodge in the way many visitors use the word. A camp near the lake added new tents in May 2026, so options are growing, but not every camp is open or has rooms free on your date. Check this before you plan around one.

A camp can be described as a lodge in one place and a tented camp in another. Look at what you actually get: bed or pitch, shared or private washing, meals or self-catering. Ask these questions rather than trusting the name.

Lake Natron accommodation: what the price covers

Two prices add up: the nightly package and the bed or pitch.

Camps currently charge a nightly package for the wildlife authority (TAWA) on top of the price for your tent or pitch. The package is not the accommodation price, so a camp that looks cheap may add it, and a camp that includes it will look dearer. The adult amounts below include 18 percent VAT.

TypeAdult per nightChild 5โ€“17Under 5
Camping package$35.40$17.70Free
Lodging package$29.50$23.60Free

Camps around Engare Sero currently charge about these amounts; they are not a fixed national tariff. Camps differ in their age bands and packages, so ask what your package includes. Village and activity charges are separate: about $35 per person once for the district gate, about $20 per person once for the activity package and $10 for children aged 5โ€“17. All amounts are in US dollars. The full picture is on our Lake Natron fees page. For most visitors, the practical choice is a fixed tent at a camp near Ngare Sero, because the waterfall and the footprints are in the same Engare Sero area.

What you can do from camp

Most camps arrange guided activities on the spot. A lake walk along the edge of the soda flats takes 1โ€“4 hours, and sunrise or sunset is preferred because of the heat. The walk to the waterfall takes 30โ€“45 minutes one way, and the whole outing runs 2โ€“3 hours. The footprints visit is about 30 minutes with a guide. The volcano climb is a separate booking with a night start.

Swimming happens at the waterfall and in natural spring pools, not in the soda lake itself, so do not plan to swim in the lake.

What to ask before you book

Names and prices change, these questions do not.

Is the nightly package included?

Ask whether the Wildlife Authority package is in the price or added at the gate. Ask the same about the village and activity charges.

What are the meals?

Do not assume full board. Ask what is served, whether special diets are possible and what you need to bring yourself.

How do you get there?

The road from Arusha takes 5โ€“6 hours and gets longer in rain. An airstrip at Ngare Sero is about 15 minutes by transfer from a camp. Check whether the camp collects you.

Where exactly is the tent?

The shoreline moves, so no camp can promise a fixed distance to the water. Ask about the view and the walk to the activities instead.

What about the heat?

The flats are hot. Ask about shade, drinking water and when the activities start.

Camp respectfully

Stay on established ground.

Stay at an established camp or site and keep to the paths your guide uses. Do not pitch on the salt crust, and do not try to reach the flamingo breeding area, which is not open to visitors. The birds can be seen from the shore on a guided walk, as described on our flamingos page.

Many travellers continue from the lake to a safari further west, so check the road and the route with your camp. For that next leg, see getting to the Serengeti.

Lake Natron camping: frequently asked questions

Can I camp at Lake Natron?

Yes, at established camps. Do not pitch on the salt crust or near the flamingo breeding area. The nightly camping package for the wildlife authority is about $35.40 per adult in 2026.

Are there lodges at Lake Natron?

There are camps with fixed tented accommodation, most of them near Ngare Sero south of the lake. Some call themselves lodges. Ask what you actually get before you book.

Can I swim in Lake Natron?

Not in the lake itself, which is a soda lake. Swimming is possible at the waterfall and in natural spring pools at some camps.

How far is the camp from the water?

That depends on the camp and on the season, because the waterline moves. Ask the camp rather than relying on a distance quoted elsewhere.

Do I need to book ahead?

It is a good idea. Availability on your date is not shown publicly, and the volcano climb fee is paid in advance.

Is this an official site?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It does not run any camp and does not take bookings for one.
