Lake Natron at a glance
Lake Natron lies in northern Tanzania in the Arusha Region, right at the border with Kenya. It is a salt and soda lake in the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley. The Ewaso Ng'iro river feeds it from the north, and in the dry season the lake depends on that inflow. Shallow pans turn pink and red when salt-loving microorganisms bloom, and white soda crusts frame the water. The volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai rises south of the lake.
This guide covers the lake and what you can reach from it: guided lake walks and lesser flamingos, the Engare Sero waterfall and footprints, the night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai, fees, camping and the road from Arusha. Lake Natron is not a TANAPA national park, so costs and rules differ from the Serengeti or Tarangire. Prices on these pages are for 2026 and they change, so confirm them when you book.

Our picks: Lake Natron tours
The day trip from Arusha is the quickest way to the shore and the flamingos. The 2-day stay and the Lengai night climb need more time, and the long safaris add Natron to the northern circuit.

A few things to know before you go
Facts that change how you plan a Lake Natron trip.
It is not a national park
Lake Natron is a protected wetland basin, not a TANAPA park. Costs come from the wildlife authority TAWA, a local community organisation and district charges.
Fees explained โAnimals do not turn to stone
The famous photos show dead birds and bats that a photographer collected along the shore and arranged for the camera. Salt can coat a body, but nothing is petrified in an instant.
What is really going on โThe volcano is active
Ol Doinyo Lengai had an explosive phase in 2007 and 2008. Its current eruption period began in April 2017 and was still continuing in March 2026. The summit is never guaranteed.
The night climb โThe footprints are thousands of years old
Scientific dating places the Engare Sero footprints between about 5,800 and 19,000 years ago, most likely at the very end of the Pleistocene.
About the footprints โTravel insurance since October 2026
Visitors entering the Tanzanian mainland need mandatory travel insurance, $44 for up to 92 days. Some residents are exempt, so check the rules for your nationality.
Getting there โScheduled flights announced
In August 2026 an airline announced daily scheduled flights serving Lake Natron, with onward links to places such as Arusha, the Serengeti and Zanzibar. Not every link is nonstop, so check the current timetable.
Roads and flights โBeyond Lake Natron
Other parks in northern Tanzania have their own guides.
Most visitors pair the lake with a safari. For the wildlife of the plains, see the Serengeti, and for the crater and the highlands around Karatu, see Ngorongoro. For elephants and baobab trees, see Tarangire. This site stays with the lake, the volcano and the Engare Sero area.

Lake Natron: frequently asked questions
Is Lake Natron a national park?
No. It is a protected wetland basin listed under the Ramsar convention in 2001. Park rules and TANAPA tariffs do not apply to the lake itself. The fees page explains which charges you meet.
How do I get to Lake Natron?
By road from Arusha via Mto wa Mbu in about 5 to 6 hours, or via Longido in about 5 hours. The road is rough in places and takes longer after rain. Scheduled flights to the Ngare Sero airstrip were announced in August 2026. See getting there.
Can I see flamingos all year?
Lesser flamingos use the lake, but numbers change and breeding can fail completely in poor years. The breeding area is never open to visitors. Read the flamingo page before you plan around them.
How hard is the Ol Doinyo Lengai climb?
It is a strenuous night ascent with a guide. A typical ascent starts at about 1 a.m., reaches the summit at about 6 a.m. and is back at the foot around noon, which makes 12 to 14 hours in total. The guide decides on the day, depending on the weather. See the climb page.
Can I swim in Lake Natron?
The soda lake is strongly alkaline and not a swimming lake. Swimming is offered at the Engare Sero waterfall instead. Ask your guide about the water level first. See the waterfall page.
Is lake-natron.org an official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to a village, a district, a wildlife authority, a camp or any tour operator.
