How the Ol Doinyo Lengai night ascent works

Ol Doinyo Lengai rises to 2,962 m above sea level south of Lake Natron. You climb it at night so that you reach the top at sunrise and are off the upper slopes before the heat. The climb is long and demanding. It is a serious undertaking and not an easy add-on to a lake visit.

A typical timeline looks like this: start at the foot of the mountain around 1:00 a.m., reach the summit area around 6:00 a.m., begin the descent from about 6:30 a.m. and be back at the base around noon. Those are estimates, not a fixed schedule. The ascent alone takes about 5 hours, while the whole outing takes 12 to 14 hours. Walking time ranges from 6 to 11 hours, so expect a wide range that depends on your pace and the conditions.

Guides and what they decide

You do not climb this volcano alone.

Go with a local guide and arrange the climb through your camp or operator the day before. The guide decides, depending on the weather and the state of the mountain, where you start and how far you go. The summit is never guaranteed. A guide who turns you back before the top is doing the job, not breaking the deal.

Do not treat old crater photos as a guide to the present. The volcano is not extinct. A period of eruptions that began in April 2017 was still continuing in March 2026, and the crater shape keeps changing. Conditions on the upper slopes and at the rim can change between one climb and the next, so ask your guide what the mountain is doing now. Read more about the volcano itself on the Ol Doinyo Lengai page.

Fees for the Lengai climb

Confirm the current amounts when you book.

ItemWithout taxWith tax
Village fee, one person$100$118
Village fee, per person from 2 people$70$82.60
Mountain fee (TAWA), per person$20$23.60

The mountain fee is paid in advance. These are separate fees for 2026 and not an all-inclusive price. Ask whether the guide, transfer and meals are part of your price. For the other local charges, see the fees page.

For most visitors, the practical choice is to book the climb together with a night or two at the lake, so that you can rest before and after. See camping and lodges for the options.

Before you decide to climb

Honest questions to ask yourself and the operator.

Fitness

The climb is hard and you do it in the dark after a long drive. No one can promise that you are fit enough, so be honest about your stamina on rough ground and ask the operator how they handle people who need to turn back.

Weather

The guide decides on the day. Heavy rain or poor visibility can stop a climb. The rainy months in the north are March to May and October to December, covered on the weather page.

Ages and conditions

Ask the operator about age limits, group size and what the guide expects from you. Do not assume a child or older traveler is accepted.

Plan B

If the mountain is not an option on your day, the waterfall hike and the footprints fill a morning. See the waterfall guide and the footprints guide.
